Bodies move : Instruments laugh, cry, talk to each other, as if alive. Sound production. Response. The organism moves. It stretches or relaxes according to the bodily and acoustic impulses that animate it with vital energy.
Anaphora is a musical organism focused on researching new approaches to improvisation within the jazz piano Trio. Drawing inspiration from non-European musical traditions — such as traditional Indonesian (Gamelan) and Indian (Konnakol) music and exploring decompositions and queering possibilities of the ‘jazz’ theme-solo-theme form — the group builds a strongly rhythmic and collective approach in which the piano, often prepared with woodwinds, can open up to a more percussive role. Together with the ears of their audience, Anaphora explores the affective, musical and perceptive possibilities that arise when bodies breathe together through improvisation. Anaphora released its debut album, Lexicon I (Auand Records), in April 2022, garnering positive reviews internationally (Best of Jazz US, Jazz Magazine France…). The group’s research has been supported by several cultural institutions including Goethe – Culture Moves Europe, SENA, Italy Music Export.
